Another great blog, Shannon, that really spoke to me. I’m turning 57 this year. And I can say that, yes, we have come a long way since the 70’s, when I was in my formative years. Just the fact that we can have this conversation and people are clapping to this blog…well, you might have no idea how different that is now than it was. But, I’m still amazed that we are still having many of the same issues and having to fight for rights that we thought we already had achieved. My mom AND dad took me as a little girl to march for the Equal Rights Amendment. It never passed. Do you know that it still has not passed? That Amendment pretty much died. And women are still having to fight for equal pay. Just as there are some pretty awesome feminist men, who see that women walking together as equals is a positive for everyone, not a way to emasculate them, there are women who receive secondary gain from having the status quo continue and, unfortunately, those women have been a powerful force in preventing us from breaking through some of the most important barriers. And there are many younger women who seem to believe that there’s no need for feminism any more because of all of the progress we HAVE made since my 90-year-old mom’s generation and, so, any woman who calls herself a “feminist,” must just be full of hate. They don’t realize that every bit of progress that they have made in their own lives to come into their own power has been made possible not only by their own hard work, but on the backs of the pioneering women before us, who literally put their lives on the line for us to be able to do what we’re doing. Thanks again!
