I think your title is misleading. You make some good points about the effect of ongoing fear on our immune system and our ability to make good decisions. I wrote a blog with some of the similar points about calming our nervous system to boost our immune system and to have better clarity of thought .But, I don’t really think you mean that fear is MORE dangerous than Covid-19. Covid-19 is killing people in the US about one every 3 minutes. That title gives those who don’t read the whole blog more ammunition to continue to call this deadly virus that is spreading like wildfire (because people are not taking it seriously and think it’s OK to not social-distance) a “hoax” and tell us we need to go back to work and “get on with life.” The scientists tell us that we need to stay home and continue social distancing in order to flatten the curve so that those on the front line, like your wife, have the ability to treat the sick more effectively. Fear is not our enemy. It informs us to stay more alert and to do what we need to do to stay safe and to keep our communities safe. It’s the getting stuck in fear that causes irrational and panicky behavior. It’s the avoiding of fear, running from fear, and/or denying that there’s danger that are extremely dangerous. The latter caused the behavior of the kids who went on spring break and 44 of them came back to where I live with positive test results. The latter is why people are crowding into megachurches, getting each other sick and then taking the virus back to their communities to get more people sick. The longer that it lasts that people deny the danger and refuse to follow the guidelines of the medical experts, the longer we’ll all be in this situation and the more people will die. I trust the medical experts. So, I would not shame people for feeling fearful. Let’s talk about how to make fear more useful. As FDR said, “Courage is not the absence of fear.”
